Myra's Tips to Wear Lolita in Summer
Here is my little guide on how to wear lolita in summer, so
first of all... DON'T!! I'm kidding, I'm kidding, but
unfortunately as someone who suffers the heat a lot I've
always had a hard time existing during the hottest months.
Italy is HOOOOOOOOT. However, over the years I think I have
acquired a decent amount of knowledge on how to be able to
survive this season and now I am applying it on lolita coords
as well. So, if you don't want to have to retire your wardrobe
for the whole summer, here is my survival guide advice:
• How to Coordinate •
- Skirts for the win! Most guides will probably advise you to wear a blouseless JSK or an OP with short sleeves. Now, there is nothing wrong with these options but unfortunately they don't really work for me. I found that I am much more comfortable with a skirt with a blouse, cutsew or camisole, since these type of tops tend to be lighter and have no lining (the shiny layer of fabric inside most lolita pieces). But how should your top be?
- Be smart with your tops: you already know that you should avoid long sleeves, but I also recommend switching out the peter pan collar for a square neckline, or a deeper cut in general. This to leave more skin out (scandalous!) and let your neck and chest breath. If you have a camisole (unfortunately I don't ߹𖥦߹) even bettter, your shoulders need to breath too!
- Materials, materials...I know velvet, wool and gobelin are very pretty, I know, but for now it's better to keep them away for winter, trust me. Light cotton and linen are the best options, but, as I mentioned before, try to look for something that has no lining entirely, since it's usually made of polyester and also adds a second layer to your dress.
- What about shirring? Now, this is mainly a personal preference, but I'd suggest to avoid pieces with a lot of shirring, since it's a big amount of fabric all bunched up in one place. Moreover it's usually lined and the elastics used to make it aren't breathable at all.
- Headwear or no headwear, that is the question: Now let's move on to our heads! I think that headress are perfectly fine, my advice is just to tie them in the back to leave your neck free. Or you can switch it out fore something lighter like hairclips and bows, that can also help you keep your hair away from the face (don't underestimate updos). If you plan on staying outside for a long time a straw hat can go a long way, anything with a wide brim to protect you from the sun.
- And what about footwear? Ankle socks or, even though it's not for me, no socks at all! I usually don't change my footwear much for summer, I just avoid boots and lined shoes but there are a lot of sandals and open-toe shoes that can be super cute with lolita. I haven't found a pair yet, but it's definitely something I'd like to try!
- Last but not least: a bag! A big bag at that. You're gonna understand why I specified the size in the next section, sooo, let's go!
